I bought a Tracfone (a Samsung slider model with the "double minutes for life" included) for emergency use some months ago. If I take it off its charger to carry around (thinking I'll use it that day), I end up not needing to use it until it's out of charge again. (In fact, I'm recharging it as I type, so I can look up the number and add minutes to the phone before the leftover minutes from the last minutes card expire.) I've heard of a TracFone subsidiary that just does emergency cell phones, but I can't remember the name of that spinoff company off-hand. (I kind of wish I had gone with that, as I don't use a cell phone enough to justify even the TracFone minutes cards.) Does anyone know anything about that emergency-phone-only spinoff of TracFone?

You do not have a monthly payment. You will have to add a phone card every three months even if you do not run out of minutes. You get 90 days of service on most Tracfone cards. You will get one year of service with the one year card.
